AI revolution threatens software jobs: Zoho CEO

Bengaluru, May 19 (UNI) In a candid and cautionary message, Zoho Corporation CEO Sridhar Vembu has warned that the next wave of technological disruption, driven by artificial intelligence and automation tools, could significantly erode employment opportunities in software development.
Vembu, known for his outspoken views on technology and self-reliance, took to social media on Saturday to sound the alarm. “The productivity revolution I see coming to software development (LLMs + tooling) could destroy a lot of software jobs,” he wrote on Sunday. “This is sobering but necessary to internalize.”
He argued that the premium currently commanded by software engineers over other professionals — such as mechanical or civil engineers, chemists, or teachers — is not a given, but a function of market relevance that could quickly vanish in the face of rapid innovation.
“I have often said this to our employees: the fact that software engineers get paid better... is not some birthright and we cannot take that for granted, and we cannot assume it will last forever,” Vembu cautioned.
Underscoring the precariousness of success in the tech industry, he added, “The fact that customers pay for our products also cannot be taken for granted.”
Vembu invoked the legendary words of Intel co-founder Andy Grove — “Only the paranoid survive” — to emphasise the need for vigilance and continuous learning in an era of accelerating change.
His remarks come at a time when large language models and generative AI tools are rapidly being integrated into software development workflows, enhancing productivity but also threatening to replace many traditional roles.
Industry observers note that Vembu's statement reflects a growing concern among tech leaders that automation may shrink the need for routine programming tasks, pushing engineers to re-skill or move up the value chain to remain relevant.
Known for building a globally competitive product company from rural India, Vembu has long advocated for decentralised innovation and a shift from urban tech hubs. His latest message reinforces his belief in the need for humility, adaptability, and constant reinvention in the face of disruption.
As AI reshapes the contours of the global job market, Vembu’s sobering forecast serves as a timely reminder that the software industry — long seen as the vanguard of economic progress — is not immune to the very forces of change it helped unleash.
