US sees spike in undocumented Indian migration over policy shifts

Washington, Feb 17 (UNI) A new study by Johns Hopkins University has found a dramatic rise in asylum claims, shifting migration routes and conflicting data on the actual number of unauthorised Indian nationals residing in the US, according to a BBC report.
The report comes in the backdrop of US President Donald Trump making mass deportation a key issue and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi promising to crack down on illegal immigration networks.
Pew Research Center and Center for Migration Studies of New York (CMS) estimate some 700,000 Indians as of 2022, making them the third-largest group after Mexico and El Salvador. In contrast, the Migration Policy Institute (MPI) puts the figure at 375,000, ranking India fifth among origin countries, the report said.
