Chennai, Oct 11 (UNI) The Southern Railway on Friday night said
12 to 13 coaches have derailed following the collision between an
express and a stationary goods train near Kavarapettai in which some
injuries were reported, while opening helpline numbers for the benefit
of passengers.
A Southern Railway release said there were no casualties but some injuries
were reported.
It said a rear end collision occurred at Kavaraipettai Railway Station around
20.30 hrs involving Train No.12578 Mysuru-Dibrugarh Darbabgah Express
with LHB coaches.
The Train passed Ponneri station around 2027 hrs and was given green
signal to run through at next station Kavaraipettai via the mainline.
"While entering the Kavaraipettai station, the train crew experienced heavy jerk and
instead of going into the main line as per the signal given, the train entered into the
Loop/line@75kmp and hit the Goods train standing in loop line", it said.
The crew is safe. The next coach i.e, parcel van caught fire, which was doused by
the Fire brigade, it said.
A total of 12-13 coaches have derailed.
So far, no casualties are reported, but some injuries have been reported.
All injured are moved to nearby hospitals.
The Up and Down Train movement is closed on the stretch.
Doctors, Ambulances, Medical Relief Van and Rescue teams, senior officers
are at site and most of the passengers have been rescued, either released
or moved to hospitals as needed.
Alternative arrangements are being made to transport passengers.
