Omar Abdullah stakes claim to power

Srinagar, Oct 11 (UNI) National Conference leader Omar Abdullah on Friday evening staked claim to form government at a meeting with Jammu and Kashmir Lt Governor Manoj Sinha.

The Chief Minister-designate handed over letters of support to the Lt Governor.

Talking to a select group of reporters Omar said he met the Lieutenant Governor and during the meeting, he submitted the letters of support from the National Conference, Congress, CPM, AAP, and the independents.

“I submitted those letters to the Lieutenant Governor and requested him to fix a date for oath and the elected government can take care of its work,” Omar said.

The oath ceremony is likely to get delayed for some more days.

“It is not that one elected government will be replaced by another. It is a Central Rule. It is a Union Territory. The Governor has to prepare a document and send it to the President. The President then goes to the Home Ministry. The Home Ministry performs the necessary procedures and returns. We have been told that it will take 2-3 days. I do not have any expectations for next week. I hope that if all this is done quickly, we will hold the oath ceremony on Wednesday,” Omar said.
On Thursday, Omar Abdullah was unanimously elected as Legislature Party Leader (LPL) by NC.
The party swept the Assembly polls in J&K and emerged as the single largest party with 42 seats. The party has a comfortable majority in the 95-member House. Its alliance partners Congress and CPI(M) won six seats and one seat respectively. Four Independents have already supported the NC.
