Nobody has right to check papers of migrant workers, asserts Meghalaya CM

Shillong, July 19 (UNI) Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma reiterated on Friday that “nobody has the right to check” the papers of migrant workers in the state, except law-enforcing agencies, even as the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) maintained that it would continue to check the documents of workers who have come from outside the state.
“We have registered ten cases against individuals and organisations so far. We have taken firm action. Our job is to ensure that the law is implemented, and if somebody is breaking the law and creating any kind of situation, then the law will take its course,” the Chief Minister told reporters after a meeting with the Khasi Students Union (KSU).
The KSU has been conducting such checks and “pushback” 2500 migrant workers who failed to show proper documentation to work in the state during the past two weeks.
