Washington, April 8 (UNI) Republicans' efforts to impeach US President Joe Biden appear to be falling apart due to a lack of evidence, but their work could lay the foundation for federal investigations and prosecution of his family if Donald Trump is reelected as president, the Axios news portal reported on Monday, citing a source close to the Trump campaign.
Earlier in March, US political news website Punchbowl News reported, citing top Republican lawmakers, that the impeachment investigation lacked conclusive evidence, with some congresspeople saying that the process should be stopped.
People close to Trump are reportedly planning to use the US Department of Justice (DOJ) against Biden and his family.
"Everything you have seen from the Biden DOJ, you can expect to see from the Trump DOJ," a source was quoted as saying.
In March, The New York Times reported that House Republicans did not have enough votes to impeach Biden. However, they are planning to use another strategy by issuing criminal referrals against the current president and those close to him. As a symbolic step, Republicans could reportedly call on the Justice Department to investigate Biden.
The Republican-led House of Representatives is conducting a formal investigation into Biden and his family. The case has been considered in three House committees for several months, with congress people collecting evidence of corruption and abuse of power. The House Judiciary Committee is expected to be able to initiate Biden's impeachment following the investigation.
