IndiGo plans 20 pc cut in capacity as Omicron cases rise

IndiGo plans 20 pc cut in capacity as Omicron cases rise

New Delhi, Jan 9 (UNI) Low-cost carrier IndiGo would pull out 20% of its flights out of over 1,500 daily flights as Omicron cases surge across the country especially in key metros such as Delhi and Mumbai.

"We anticipate that around 20% of our current scheduled operations will be withdrawn from service," the airline said in a statement.

Having a total fleet size of about 275 aircraft, IndiGo has over 50% market share in the domestic aviation market.

The airline said that due to the increasing number of Omicron infections, large numbers of IndiGo customers are changing their travel plans.

"In response to customer needs, IndiGo is waiving change fees and is offering free changes for all new and existing bookings made up to 31st January, for flights up to 31st March 2022. With the reduced demand, we will also be selectively withdrawing some of our flights from service," IndiGo said.

The Gurgaon-based carrier further said that cancellations of flights will be done at least 72 hours in advance and customers will be moved to the next available flight and will also be able to change their travel through the use of Plan B on the company's website.

Other airlines are set to follow suit as people cancel their flight trips in the wake of rapidly rising Covid cases.
