NDRF teams begin rescue, relief ops in quake-hit Turkiye

New Delhi, Feb 8 (UNI) External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Wednesday said NDRF teams have reached Gaziantep, near the epicentre of the 7.8 Richter quake that shook Turkiye, and began rescue and relief operations, even as he named India’s mission there 'Operation Dost'.
In a tweet, the EAM said, “Under #OperationDost, India is sending search and rescue teams, a field hospital, materials, medicines and equipment to Türkiye and Syria.

“This is an ongoing operation and we would be posting updates.
“@NDRFHQ teams have now reached Gaziantep and commenced search and rescue operations.

“Wish them the very best in their efforts.”

MEA spokesperson Arindam Bagchi in a tweet said relief material had also reached Damascus in Syria.
“Over 6 tons of emergency relief assistance reaches Syria.

“Received at the Damascus airport by Deputy Minister of Local Administration & Environment Moutaz Douaji.

“Includes 3 truck-loads of protective gear, emergency use medicines, ECG machines and other medical items,” he posted.

India’s humanitarian outreach comes as the death toll in the Turkiye-Syria earthquake has crossed 11,000, with nearly 9,000 deaths in Turkiye alone.
