Maha Govt directs gram panchayats to stop widow practice tradition in villages

Kolhapur, May 18 (UNI) The Maharashtra government has issued a circular to all gram panchayats in the state to stop undesirable tradition of widow practice in their respective villages, on the lines of the Herwad gram panchayat in Shirol tehsil of the district, officials informed on Wednesday.
On May 17, the state's Rural Development Ministry issued a circular to all gram panchayats with an appeal to stop tradition of widow practice in their respective villages by passing a resolution to this effect on the lines of Herwad gram panchayat's recent resolution to this effect.
Taking exception to outdated tradition of widow practice, in which after the death of a man, his wife would wipe 'kumkum' (vermillion) on her forehead, snap her 'mangalsutra' (gold chain indicating her marital status) and break her bangles, Rural Development officer of Herwad gram panchayat Ms Pallavi Kolekar with help of Darpan Surggonda Patil moved a resolution to stop this tradition in the village, which was passed by the gram sabha.
