Kozhikode: Transgender gives birth to baby, keep gender secret

Kozhikode, Feb 8 (UNI) A transgender couple on Wednesday were blessed with a baby through cesarean section at Government Medical College hospital, Kozhikode here. The couple however decided to keep the baby's gender a secret for now, as they plan to raise the child by transcending all the limits of caste, religion or gender.
Transgenders, Ziya Paval (21) of Malappuram ,who was born as a man and a classical dance teacher by profession changed into a woman, while Zahad (23) of Thirvanthapuram, who was born as a woman and working as an accountant in a private institution transform into a man, both living together at Ummalathur in Kozhikode district for the last three years, blessed a baby in the morning. Zahad , real mother who became the first trans man father in India through conception .While Ziya, real father of the child, has refused to disclose the newborn's gender identity and stated that they did not want to make it public at this time.
At first the couple had enquired to adopt a baby first, but,the legal proceedings were challenged before them as a transgender couple. So they started pregnancy treatment after the preliminary check-ups by the team of doctors of the Kozhikode Medical College hospital to ensure that there were no other health related problems. After the routine test, Doctors indicated that March 4 is the expected date of delivery, but pain started in the morning and led to a Cesarean and the baby was born by around 0937 AM. Zahad gave birth to a healthy child with a weight of 2.92 kg and the child has been admitted to the NICU ward in the hospital. Hospital sources said the health of mother Zahad and child were in stable condition . Zahad had conducted hormone therapy and started his transition procedure from female to male and removed the breast, but the uterus was not removed, so far. Zahad conceived the baby from Ziya Paval and the couple decided that the baby will be fed breast milk from the milk bank of the hospital. However, they refused to disclose the new born's gender identity and stated that they did not want to make it public at this time.
