India calls for immediate de-escalation between Israel, Iran

New Delhi, April 14 (UNI) Citing the potential threat to peace and security amid the escalating tensions between Israel and Iran, India on Sunday called for “immediate de-escalation” and “exercise of restraint” between both nations.
The Ministry of External Affairs in a statement today said, “We are seriously concerned at the escalation of hostilities between Israel and Iran which threaten peace and security in the region.”
Calling for immediate de-escalation and exercise of restraint between both nations, the Ministry emphasised the importance of maintaining security and stability in the region.
It further urged both nations to step back from violence and return to the path of diplomacy.
The ministry also highlighted that it is closely monitoring the evolving situation. “Our embassies in the region are in close touch with the Indian community,” it said.
This comes after Iran launched dozens of drones and ballistic missiles at Israel in a retaliatory attack for a suspected Israeli strike in Syria that killed two of its top military generals.
In the wake of Iran's response, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu convened a meeting of his war cabinet in Tel Aviv.
The United States held talks with the Israeli PM following meetings with the Security Cabinet and the War Cabinet. U.S. Defence Secretary Austin said, “The United States will protect its forces and help defend Israel; we do not seek conflict with Iran.”
Meanwhile, the UN Security Council announced that it will hold an emergency meeting over Iran's unprecedented drone and missile attacks on Israel.
