Incessant rains triggers flooding in parts of North Karnataka

Hubballi, June 12 (UNI) Incessant overnight rainfall has triggered widespread flooding and disruptions across parts of North Karnataka, with Dharwad, Hubballi, and Gadag districts bearing the brunt. A red alert has been sounded in Dharwad district by the Indian Meteorological Department, prompting emergency measures.
In a dramatic incident near Yamanur village in Navalgund taluk, Dharwad district, a family of four — husband, wife, and two children — was trapped inside their farmhouse after floodwaters from the overflowing Tuppri Lake encircled the premises. With all access routes cut off, district officials have launched urgent rescue operations to bring the family to safety.
In Hubballi's Ambika Nagar locality of Unkal area, a large tree was uprooted due to the intense rainfall, causing panic among nearby residents. Fortunately, no casualties were reported.
Meanwhile, in the Gadag-Betageri region, torrential downpour led to the Benne Halla stream overflowing in Ron taluk near Yavagal village. The resultant waterlogging submerged a key bridge, leading to the closure of the Ron-Naragund-Yavagal road. The situation sparked alarm among local commuters, farmers, and nearby villagers.
In Hubballi's Rambhapur Colony, over 100 homes were inundated as rainwater mixed with drainage water surged into residential areas, leaving residents distressed and struggling to recover from the sudden flooding.
Taking cognisance of the situation, Dharwad Deputy Commissioner Divya Prabhu announced a one-day holiday for all Anganwadi centres, primary, secondary, PU, and graduate colleges on Thursday. However, she clarified that the PUC annual examinations would proceed as scheduled. The DC also directed all officials to remain centrally stationed for better coordination and urged residents, particularly in low-lying areas, to stay vigilant and take necessary precautions.
Heavy rainfall continues to lash Dharwad city and surrounding regions, with authorities on high alert as more downpours are expected over the next 48 hours.
