EntertainmentPosted at: May 20 2022 6:17AM India & Bangladesh come together to produce Sheikh Mujibur Rahman biopicCannes, May 20 (UNI) In a rare display of high-level political and cultural cooperation, India and Bangladesh have joined hands at the ongoing Cannes film festival to unveil a joint cinematic project on the life of Bangladesh's Father of the Nation, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.'Mujib: The Making of the Nation' directed by celebrated filmmaker Shyam Benegal is the first film to be made under a co-production agreement signed between the two South Asian neighbours two years ago.The trailer of 'Mujib', a project that has witnessed collaboration between Indian and Bangladeshi film professionals, was released at the 75th Cannes film festival where India is the first-ever 'Country of Honour' at its film market, Marche du Film. The trailer was released in the presence of Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Anurag Singh Thakur and his Bangladeshi counterpart Hasan Mahmud at the India Pavilion of the Marche du Film on Thursday."The film is a gift from India on the occasion of the birth centenary of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman by Prime Minister Narendra Modi," said Mr Thakur. "When war is raging between neighbours in another part of the world, here is an example of how to have good relations with your neighbours," he added, alluding to the Russia-Ukraine conflict."The film shows the strong friendship between India and Bangladesh. It sends a message of peace to the world," Mr Thakur said.Echoing his Indian counterpart, Mr Mahmud said the film demonstrated the strength and depth of relationship between the two countries. "Sheikh Mujibur Rahman's life will remain an inspiration for oppressed people all over the world," he added. The film is jointly produced by the National Film Development Corporation and Bangladesh Film Development Corporation.Shot in the middle of the coronavirus pandemic in the last two years, 'Mujib' is a major international co-production aimed at the global market and the vast Indian and Bangladeshi diaspora. Popular Bangladeshi actor Arifin Shuvoo plays Mujibur Rahman, who led the liberation movement of the former East Pakistan, militarily aided by India, towards creating a new country in 1977. Mujibur Rahman, who became the first prime minister of Bangladesh in 1972 and later president of the country, was assassinated in 1975. The current Bangladesh prime minister Sheikh Hasina is the daughter of Mujibur Rahman."Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was an extraordinary person. He was from a middle class family and led a simple life. He had a burning ambition to serve his people and create a nation," said Benegal in a video message on the occasion of the trailer release of the film. "We worked with technicians and artists from both the sides of the border," added the director, who is currently working on the post-production of 'Mujib'.
