Bhubaneswar, Dec 2 (UNI) Veteran Odia film actress Jharana Das, suffering from old age ailment, passed away at her residence at Chandi Road in Cuttack.
Das who died late Thursday night was 82 years old.
After a brief stint as a child artist in All India Radio,Cuttack, Jharana Das entered into the silver screen and won the hearts of million people of the state though her performances in 1960s and 1970s.
She was awarded with the prestigious Jayadev Puraskar by the Odisha government for her lifetime contribution to the Odia film industry in 1997. She was also honoured with Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra Award for lifetime achievement in 2016.
People from all walks of life thronged her residence to pay their last tribute to the departed soul.
Her roles in films like "Amadabata", "Malajanha", "Nari", "Sri Jagannath", "Adina Megha," and Abhinetri had touched the hearts of the people.She had also acted in TV serials and performed TV shows.
Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik has expressed his deep grief at the demise of Jharana Das whom she described as an actor par excellence.
Patnaik said her voice and acting both in stage and film has brought her immense popularity adding her death had caused a big void in the Odia film industry.
The Chief Minister convened his deep condolence to the bereaved family members and announced that her last rights will be performed with full state honour.
Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan also condoled the demise of actress Jharana Das and said he was deeply saddened by the passing away of Odisha's famous cine actress who will be remembered for all time to come by lakhs of Odia people for her voice and acting.
