Paris, June 1 (UNI) Defending champion Iga Swiatek her third-round berth at the French Open despite an early scare against Claire Liu, beating her rival 6-4 6-0 on Court Philippe-Chatrier here on Thursday.
The world No. 1 grabbed the first set as quickly as she could in the first three games, but Liu roared back and floored her to win the next three games to restore parity.
The Pole swiftly stalled Liu's momentum by breaking her at 4-3, before pocketing the set. The second set was no different from the first with Swiatek again breaking her American opponent twice.
Swiatek knocked off Liu's another fightback as she saved three break points in the fourth game and earned yet another win at the Grand Slam.
"I am really happy," she said on court after the match. "I managed to play the second set a little bit better and learn from the first set, that’s the most important thing for me," she added. UNI BDN
