Mexico City, Oct 2 (UNI) The death toll from a church roof collapse in the Mexican city of Ciudad Madero has risen to nine and 40 people have been injured, the regional department of the Mexican Secretariat of Public Security said on Monday.
"Unfortunately, it has been reported about nine dead and 40 injured, and the information is still being specified in accordance with the progress of rescue operations," the security department of Tamaulipas state said on X (previously known as Twitter).
Media reported that the rescuers were looking for another 30 people believed to be trapped under the rubble.
The death toll from the roof collapse has increased to 10 people and 60 wounded, the local authorities said.
"It is reported about 10 dead and 60 injured, with 23 of them taken to hospital and two seriously injured," the regional security department said on X.
The roof of the church collapsed earlier on Monday reportedly during a christening ceremony, but the exact number of people who were inside the building was unknown. The security ministry said that the accident was believed to have occurred as a result of a "structural failure." Debris clearing at the scene is underway, it added.
