Cabinet approves Rs 8,232 cr for opening 85 KVs and 28 NVs

New Delhi, Dec 6 (UNI) The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday sanctioned a total of Rs 8,232 crore for opening 85 Kendriya Vidyalayas (KVs) and 28 Navodaya Vidyalayas.
The total estimated requirement of funds for establishment of the 85 new KVs and expansion of one existing nearby KV is about Rs 5,872.08 crore spread over a period of eight years from 2025-26. This includes capital expenditure component of Rs 2,862.71 crore and operational expenditure of Rs 3,009.37 crore.
"As on date, there are 1,256 functional KVs, including 3 abroad viz. Moscow, Kathmandu and Tehran and a total number of 13.56 lakh (approx.) students are studying in these KVs," a government statement said.
Kendriya Vidyalayas are primarily opened to cater to educational needs of wards of transferable and non-transferable employees of Central Government including Defence and Paramilitary forces and for children of floating population and others including those living in remote and undeveloped locations in the country.
New KVs are proposed in various states such as Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Himachal Pradesh, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh and Odisha. One KV in Shivamogga, Karnataka is proposed to be expanded.
The total estimated requirement of funds for establishment of the 28 NVs is Rs 2,359.82 crore spread over a period of five years from 2024-25 to 2028-29. This includes capital expenditure component of Rs 1,944.19 crore and operational expenditure of Rs 4,15.63 crore.
As on date, there are 661 sanctioned NVs across the country out of which 653 NVs are functional.
The NVs are fully residential, co-educational schools from Class VI to XII. Admissions to these schools are done on the basis of a selection test. Around 49,640 students are admitted in NVs to class VI every year.
New NVs are proposed in the states of Andhra Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Telangana and West Bengal.
