Arab League to hold emergency meeting Sunday over Houthi attack

Arab League to hold emergency meeting Sunday over Houthi attack

Cairo, Jan 22 (UNI) The Arab League Council at the level of permanent delegates is to hold an emergency meeting on Sunday in Cairo to consider the Houthi terror attacks on the United Arab Emirates.
The Council of the League of Arab States decided to hold an extraordinary meeting under the chairmanship of Kuwait, on the basis of a request submitted by the United Arab Emirates to examine the Houthi terrorist attacks in Abu Dhabi, the Arab League said in a statement on Friday.
On Monday, Houthi rebels carried out deadly attacks on the Musaffah area and Abu Dhabi airport, in which three persons – two Indian nationals and one Pakistani – were killed, and six others were injured.
Houthi rebels claimed responsibility for these attacks.
Founded in March 1945, the League of Arab States (or Arab League) is a loose confederation of 22 Arab nations that have pledged to cooperate on economic and military affairs, among other matters.
The League makes decisions on a majority basis, but there is no mechanism to compel members to comply with resolutions. It has been criticized for its internal conflicts and collective inaction on important international issues.
The 22 members as of 2021 are Algeria, Bahrain, Comoros, Djibouti, Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Libya, Mauritania, Morocco, Oman, Palestine, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, Tunisia, the United Arab Emirates, and Yemen.
